Key Information:

Submission to Interpret is free for all readers who need it to be. If for whatever reason you would prefer not to pay our editorial fees, simply send a submission to our email as normal. No questions will be asked and no proof is required: this is part of our commitment to openness to all authors, and it will never change.

If you have the means, we ask that you pay £3 or equivalent to cover editorial fees to our PayPal or to support us on Patreon. Despite receiving no institutional support, we operate an honesty box system.

Information on our fast-track service, with replies within five working days, can be found below alongside the details for professional editorial feedback.

It goes without saying that readers of contemporary literary magazines, including our own, are more likely to find success when submitting.

Specific Guidelines:

  • The magazine is open to any genre or form of poem or short story.

  • Please send no more than three poems or two stories per submission.

  • Our limit for short fiction is 2500 words.

  • Send only original work for which you hold the copyright. This includes all quotations, such as epigraphs.

  • All unsolicited work must be unpublished in magazines worldwide. We consider 'published' to mean 'visible on any website excluding private social media accounts'.

  • Attach a 30-word, third-person bio.

  • While we accept simultaneous submissions, please notify us immediately if your work has been accepted elsewhere.

  • Interpret accepts submissions in any language from anywhere in the world. Our editor is a professional translator of French, Portuguese, Spanish and Italian. Writers in these languages are not required to supply an English translation, as this can be completed by our editor; they may choose to send another translation, however.

  • If you write in a language other than those mentioned above, your work must be accompanied by a full translation into English.

  • All successful submissions will be published first in their original language, then in English translation.

  • All authors in Interpret are offered a fee for their work. We currently pay each contributor, including translators, as much as we are able, which is £10 or equivalent. We hope this fee will rise in future.

  • All published authors receive a copy of the magazine.

For our fast-track service:

  • Interpret offers a fast-track service for writers who purchase a copy of the magazine or make an equivalent donation.

  • Authors will be informed within five working days if their work has been shortlisted for publication. Response times are otherwise between one and three months. Please include 'fast track' in your submission subject line and provide evidence of your purchase.

For full editorial feedback:

  • For full feedback on a submission, including line edits and comments, please contact our editor at the address below, with 'Feedback' in your subject line.

  • Cost of feedback is set at £20 or equivalent per poem and £40 or equivalent per short story, paid in advance at the PayPal link on our 'Subscribe & Buy' page.

  • Previous recipients of feedback have seen their work published both in Interpret and in leading UK magazines such as Gutter, Poetry Scotland, World Literature Today, Propel, and Acumen.

For translators:

  • Interpret is proud to showcase the best new literary translation. If you are a translator and would like to contribute to an upcoming issue, please email us with your working languages and a submission following the guidelines above. Please note that you must hold the copyright and/or have all the necessary permission from the original author(s).
